NEW ULM– New Ulm’s Public Utilities Commission unanimously approved the purchase of a heat exchanger for $46,601 Tuesday.
The heat exchanger will replace the current one attached to the stand-by boiler at the city’s power plant. The heat exchanger ensures the stand-by boiler is in hot circulation at all times. This means, if the current boiler goes down, the stand-by boiler can begin immediately without any disruption to the city’s power.
Commissioner Seth Visser asked Utilities Director Kris Manderfeld about install.
“In this particular case, there will be someone else coming to install,” she said. “The lead time on this is two or three months. It’s probably not going to get done until the end of this year if not [the beginning of] next year.”
Visser asked for clarification about whether the install price is figured into the exchanger’s price.
“No, this is just for the heat exchanger,” Manderfeld said. “There’s $100,000 budgeted so we will be well within that amount [with installation costs].”
Commissioner Kim Williams asked about the state of the current heat exchanger. Manderfeld said it is currently functioning but at the end of its life, making its replacement necessary.
Commissioner Shannon Hillesheim made the motion to approve the purchase and Williams seconded.
