Korean construction major Daewoo Engineering & Construction (Daewoo E&C) has installed a new cryogenic heat exchanger facility at the $1.58bn Nigeria NLNG Train 7 project.
The technology will help to liquefy large volumes of natural gas, readying it for refinement and eventual shipping.
According to the company, the facility is the largest cryogenic heat exchanger using Air Products’ AP-C3MR process – technologies currently also in operation at the 14 existing LNG trains located in Ras Laffan, Qatar.
“The successful installation of the cryogenic heat exchanger, transported from the US to Nigeria over the Atlantic Ocean, underscores the recognition of our extensive expertise and experience accumulated over the years,” said Lee Won-gil, Project Manager at Daewoo E&C.
The six-train NLNG project produces 22.5m metric tonnes per year of LNG, amounting to roughly 10% of the world’s LNG consumption. The seventh train aims to expand production to 30m metric tonnes per year.
Having launched its ‘Decade of Gas’ development roadmap in 2021, the country aims to unlock up to 600 trillion cubic feet in unproven gas resources.
However, the NLNG project has courted controversy with high-profile investigations over alleged bribes.
This includes $180m paid by the TSKJ consortium of engineering companies to Nigerian government officials to win contracts worth over $6bn to obtain building contracts for NLNG facilities.
In 2009 KBR pleaded guilty to paying bribes to Nigerian government officials to secure four contracts to build and expand the Nigeria LNG terminal.
Italian companies Eni and Saipem could be barred from doing business with the majority owner of NLNG Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) after Milan’s prosecutor’s office launched legal proceedings investigating alleged bribes paid by the TSKJ consortium to the Nigerian government.
