Tranter to supply heat exchangers for Texas-based blue hydrogen plant - gasworld

kitabukan.blogspot.com

Tranter Heat Exchangers (Tranter) has won a contract to supply six large plate and frame heat exchangers for a blue hydrogen plant that is currently under development in Texas, US.

The order was placed by an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor and will see the delivery of six large plates and frames for heat exchangers.

After installation, the heat exchangers will be used to recover heat and vent condensers to remove CO2 from a gas stream.

The heat exchanges will play an integral role in the plant’s ability to supply both hydrogen and nitrogen to produce blue ammonia for companies based in the US Gulf Coast and, in turn, help to decarbonise operations.

Drazen Dragicevic, Area Sales Manager for EPC at Tranter, said that knowing the process design for plate heat exchangers in the post-combustion carbon capture application was key to securing the contract.

He continued, “We had several discussions with their engineers regarding design margins, shear stress, port size, and velocities to ensure safe and trouble-free operation of the heat exchangers in their process.”

A transitional fuel

Although blue hydrogen will generally have a larger greenhouse gas (GHG) footprint compared to green hydrogen, the actual emissions will vary depending on chosen technologies and processes within the entire value chain.

In its report entitledblue hydrogen in a low-carbon energy future, DNV explored the greenhouse gas footprint of different blue hydrogen processes and supply chains , and what it takes for blue hydrogen to meet thresholds as set by the taxonomies developed by the EU and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).

The organisation discovered that blue hydrogen can be delivered with a lower greenhouse gas footprint than the thresholds in the taxonomies, although this will require a combination of hydrogen production technology and carbon capture that focuses on high conversion rates and high CO2 capture rates, resulting in low process related CO2 and methane emissions.

North American CO2 Summit 2024

Join gasworld in September 2024 as our North American CO2 Summit heads to Nashville. More information including our theme and agenda will be released over the coming weeks – you can register your interest to ensure you stay updated.

Our North American CO2 Summit 2023 agenda was focused on how to source, move and use CO2 more effectively and sold out, so we recommend securing your space.
