Buffalo Sabres made a phenomenal move trading Robert Hagg - Sabre Noise

The Buffalo Sabres were going to sell at and around the NHL trade deadline and as rumor had it, one of the older defensemen was on the trading block.

The Buffalo Sabres traded Robert Hagg to the Florida Panthers for a sixth-round pick in 2022. The trade gives the Sabres ten picks for the upcoming draft, granting them plenty of leverage as they continue to reshape the organization from the NHL on down.

Hagg, who spent his first five seasons with the Philadelphia Flyers, arrived in Buffalo as part of the Rasmus Ristolainen trade. Buffalo received a 2021 first-round pick in that exchange, which they used to draft Isak Rosen, plus a second-round pick in 2023.

Buffalo Sabres won out on the Robert Hagg trade

While a sixth-round pick feels like little compensation, let’s go back and look at the big picture regarding both of Hagg’s trades. When the Sabres shipped Ristolainen for Hagg, they received generous compensation. Then, Hagg spent most of the season relegated to the third pairing while younger talent buried him on the roster.

Despite this, Hagg still saw more ice time than he had in his previous three seasons, yet failed to perform to the same extent in Buffalo. In 48 games, Hagg logged just eight points while his -9 +/- was a career-worst.

Hagg also recorded just 97 hits and his 2.2 percent shooting percentage was his worst since 2017-18. Overall, Hagg did not perform well unless you count his 91 blocks, which threatened his career-high of 158 in 2018-19.

Most importantly, the trade to Florida shows that general manager Kevyn Adams wanted to accomplish one thing: To free up another roster spot for a younger defenseman. Trading Hagg allows the Sabres to potentially groom another young defenseman this season, and that’s why they won out on the trade.

With Colin Miller’s, Mark Pysyk’s, and Will Butcher’s contracts set to expire in the offseason, it further shows Adams wants as much young talent playing at the NHL level as possible. It will be interesting to see whether the Sabres strike a last-second deal for any of the aforementioned defensemen.
